The KvadraT Gallery was opened on the 12th of April 2002, on the Day of Astronautics. The first Exhibition "Sky" presented by the gallery was thematically in tune with the holiday. "The Sky" is the name of a new piece executed by one of the participants of the exhibition, Vitaly Pushnitsky. It is performed in the flash-art technique, hitherto uncharacteristic of him. Another participant, Elena Gubanova, in pursuance of the given topic, presented a photo-installation entitled "Such persons are not cut out for astronauts", this also being her first endeavour in that technique.
The KvadraT Gallery develops the activities of the RusskiAlbum Foundation established in the early 2000. The main objective of the Foundation is to represent St Petersburg's art. Works of our artists used to be exhibited only in the USA: at the New York Frants Gallery Space or at the festival of Petersburg's Art in Baltimore (February 2003), where was displayed the Moving Objects project, earlier exhibited in the Russian Museum. Now that the KvadraT Gallery is functioning, the Foundation can hold exhibitions in the artists' hometown. The Gallery also holds exhibitions of American artists. One of these projects is a series of exhibitions named the "Baltic Mist".
Though the Gallery is meant for new technologies, it considers it important to remember the traditional art mediums, that is, painting, sculpture, drawing, and graphic design. So the Gallery stipulates exhibitions of Petersburg artists of the older generations.
2003 happens to be the first year of the Gallery's functioning, so it feels free to adjust to changes happening in the art life of the city. Any new interesting art-project will surely be claimed by the Kvadrat Gallery.
