Elena Sukhoveeva and Victor Khmel, «The Letatlin Descendants»
09.06.2005 – 03.07.2005
Elena Sukhoveeva and Victor Khmel can be called psychoanalysts in
photography. Each of their projects is a penetration into dark, mysterious and
forbidden domains. They use photography as an X-ray to reveal the
real «self» of models. Their project «Somatype» has
received great acclaim.
In 2001, the artists created «The Letatlin Descendants» project,
which was inspired by a work of Tatlin's. The artists interpreted the ideas of
flight through the prism of the contemporary gender vision. The project, which
is to be shown in the QuadraT Gallery of St Petersburg, will be more than just a
provocative attempt to use photography in performance. The authors, E.
Sukhoveeba and V. Khmel, will stage a performance by acting it out in a
«natural» setting. Having relinquished their own aura in favour of
the machine in the symbolic Man-Machine fight, they have reserved a
right of subjective freedom and joined the avant-garde by right of spiritual
succession. Their Terra Mobile (Letatlin) in the exhibition space of the Gallery
will function as an Internet communication channel to bring viewers into contact
through the discussion of «The link between the 20th century avant-garde
and the 21st century technologies».
