Vladlen Gavrilchik. «MEMORIA»
17.11-19.12 2004

  Portfolio   Photos from the Event

Vladlen Gavrilchik is one of the brightest representatives of the first generation of Leningrad's underground. Artist and poet, Gavrilchik's art and lifestyle epitomized the principles of that creative, commercialism-free and ideology-free, specific culture that had brewed in the Leningrad of the 1970s as an opposition to the official culture. He began his career as a painter of «the seventh day». A man-of-war's man, he went for art, which became the cause of his life, when his mind and character had been completely set. Yet the primitive method, which he employed for over a decade, reflects his inner development from natural and elemental naivety of the outlook to the understanding of primitive methods as specific expressive devices. This is no longer the traditional uneducated painting: the naivety intonation is weighed, it is sooner the absurdist outlook that has derived from the poetics of the 1920-30s and which is tinted by social and cultural impulses of the Soviet way of life of the 70s. In the 1980s, Gavrilchik turns to social motifs though his representative portraits and genres can hardly be classed as the socialist art gathering head, sooner they are very private and ironic, preserving the narration of historical painting. In the early 90s, Gavrilchik turns to the object, he makes a series of dimensional compositions on naval architecture. At the same time he does a lot of painting and sets up a group — a circle of drawing. His works belong to a number of prestigious private collections in Europe and the USA, in particular, in Norton Dodge's collection which has been handed over to the Rutger's Museum in New Jersey. Many of his works are stored in the State Russian Museum.
