«Circular Waves». Szabolcs KissPal (Hungary).
30.10-15.11 2004

  Portfolio   Photos from the Event

The exhibition consists of two installations. Both of them are using water as a medium.

Circular Wave 2002
CD Player, amplifier, speaker, slide projector
In the first one the main concern is directed towards the issue of translation: how the sign behaves while it is being translated into different mediums, and what role an artistic gesture could have in this process.
The installation uses the technology not as a means of displaying an attitude or an artistic imagery, but as a tool by which a reconstruction process is attempted. This act aims to recreate the visual appearance of an event that has been recorded only on audio media. From the amplified sounds of water drops, the possible visual event is being built up by analogue means, the non existing images of the drops, as they reach the surface of the water.

CCKW 2001
Clock, water
The second installations uses the water surface as a metaphor for the act of reproduction, a process in time which has a different flow in the reality and the reproduced image. A clock which in reality is an inverted mechanism, counts back in the time but its image on the water surface seems to be real. There are a couple of seconds in each minute when the real and fictitious times are overlapping and the viewer witnesses a strange interference in which the illusion of reality is being blurred by waves.

Szabolcs KissPal (1967) is an artist based in Budapest. He has developed installation and performance works towards video and computer-based practice, and although using technical and electronic images and sounds, his art maintains an «intermedial» attitude towards the elements of the work, following rather an «inductive» rather than a «generative» tradition.
