Mikhail Hermann was born in Leningrad. Professor, Ph. D., academician at the Academy of Humanities, member of International Association of Art Critics (AICA). Chief researcher at the New Trends Section at the State Russian Museum. The author of over thirty books and two hundred of articles. Among his book the most important are: “Antwerp. Gent. Brugge”, “William Hogarth and his Time”, Antoine Watteau, “1920-30s. Painting”, “Alexander Russakov”, “Oscar Rabin”, Marc Chagall”, “Remembered Portraits”, “Albert Marquet”, “Mikhail Vrubel”, “The Compound Past” (chapters from the book of memoirs in the “Nevsky Archives” Almanac), “Vassily (Basil) Kandinsky”, “Impressionism in Russian painting”. The scope of his academic interests comprises the art history of the 18th-20th centuries, the new art in the context of general cultural issues, relations of various kinds of artistic activities and their interaction with the flux of public taste.
