Elena Vassilevskaya was born in Leningrad. In 1980 she graduated from the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, the department of theory and history of arts. Since 1975 she has worked in the State Russian Museum. At present she is the head of the section of the Russian sculpture of the 20th century. She is the author of many publications, catalogues, reports at the scholarly conferences on the matters of contemporary sculpture, she is also a curator of exhibitions.
