Novikov Urii
Together with my parents (topographer and geologist) I have traveled half the former USSR from the Primorsky Territories to the Carpathians and from Karelia to Tadjikistan. I was a student at a technical college, a topographic college and Leningrad State University (the department of Art Criticism). Accordingly, I worked as an installation engineer, ship assembler, fitter, geodesist, guide, senior research restorer, spent ten seasons in archeological expeditions thus I have learned about the second half of the former Soviet Union. In 1957-58 I was imprisoned for my outright refusal to join the army and an attempt to cross the Russo-Finnish border. The last twenty two years I have worked in the sphere of the preservation of monuments of history and culture in St Petersburg. I went into studying non-official art of Leningrad St Petersburg in the early 1970s. Since 1977 I have contributed articles on artists in the samizdat magazines «37», The Archives\\\\", A Clock», «The Obvodny Canal\\\\" and others (in all, over 120 articles). I was one of the founders of association of unofficial literary men (the «Club 81») and artists «Partnership of Experimental Fine Arts», as well as the Sergey Diaghilev Centre of Arts. In 1987 I joined the Union of Artists. Later I published 100 articles in Collections, magazines and newspapers on the subjects of «The realm of Art» (including the ones on Diaghilev), on the history of St Petersburg and on preservation of monuments, on artists and poets of the avant-garde movement, etc. I am also the author of the still unpublished book on the history of unofficial art of Leningrad of the 1950s early 1980s. I am completing the research into records for the book on the Russian period in Diaghilevs life. At present I am working as an acting head of the Department of Historical Expertise at the Committee of the State Inspection of Monument Preservation.
