Elena Gubanova and Ivan Govorkov, «Delicate Vibration»
The artists Elena Gubanova and Ivan Govorkov are well-known to the Petersburg public.
Tasks that Elena Gubanova sets in her work are in the tideway of «spiritual abstraction». Her works are an amalgamation of textures, various materials, complex volumes and unusual solutions. She exploits the capacities of colour freely and daringly: colours combine to make rich chords referring the spectator to the Russian icon, or they can be minimalistically simple — grey, shades of black or even a complete «absence» of colour when light and shade substitute for paint.
Elena Gubanova works together with her husband, Ivan Govorkov, a distinctly intellectual type of an artist, predisposed to meaningful and expressive paradoxes. He is an adept in various mediums (graphic works, easel and monumental painting, sculpture), which distinguishes him from many other conceptualists. Having mastered classic and modern languages, he seems to be skating on the edge of the incompatible, thereby finding a different approach to the solution of the pivotal problem forever present in the Russian consciousness — that of the West vs. the East. The exhibition presents pieces relating to various periods of the artists« works.
The exhibition is open from 24th December 2004 to 30th January 2005 at the KvadraT Gallery.
